The Costa de la Luz is possibly the most unspoilt of all the southern Spanish coasts and has seen much less development and Spanish property sales to foreigners than its Costa del Sol cousin. Geographically, the coast runs from Gibraltar in the south up in a northwesterly direction to the Portuguese border. The coast faces the green blue Atlantic and has some of the most stunning white sandy beaches in the whole of Spain, at times you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the Caribbean.
The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) forms the Atlantic boarder of the Iberian Peninsula from Tarifa in the south to the Portuguese border. The region is divided roughly into two halves with the historic port of Cadiz at its centre.
This coast is quite beautiful with long sunny days, fine golden sand and a deep blue ocean. It would be idyllic, save for the wind which can vary from a cooling breeze to a robust gale.
Haven for Solitude and Watersports
Famous for wind surfing and, latterly, kite surfing, many hundreds of Spaniards travel from as far as Madrid for the weekend. Jerez Airport has seen a 10 fold increase in overseas visitors in the last year, some seeking the solitude and wild life of the Doñana National Park in the Huelva region, but most targeting the unspoilt beaches, coves and the action on the waves.
